6. True disciples have a hearing ear.
John 10:27 My sheep (Disciples, mature Believers) (not lambs) hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
We need to understand that God's first commandment is to hear.
Mark 12: 28-31 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
"Hear" is the Greek word "Akouo" meaning "to understand". It is the Hebrew word "shama" meaning " to hear intelligently, to discern, in essence to get understanding"
Matthew 13:1-21 The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Look at some of the things that can keep us from hearing the Word of God
- Satanic attack, the wicked one who steals the good seed out of your heart,
- The cares, concerns or love of the world
- The deceitfulness of riches
- Unprepared heart. Break up your fallow ground, stoney heart referring to hardness of heart.
- Other things
- Not grounded in the Word of God, baby Christians
- Tribulation and persecution for the Word's sake, mockings
- Offence
Jesus said their ears are dull of hearing. Things get dull by having other things pass over them repeatedly and this is what happens to so many Christians. They hear the word of God but they don't do anything about it in their lives. They don't allow the Word of God to change them. They think it is for someone else and they never grow, by being obedient to it in their own lives. We need to realize that sin hardens the heart and the more you sin the easier it is for you to continue sinning. We end up searing our consciences and what should produce great remorse, we are no longer effected by it. Our hearts become hardened. Jesus said their ears are dull of hearing. We need to clean the spiritual wax out of our spiritual ears by confessing our sin and turning away from it and doing what God's Word commands us to do.
2 Kings 17:7-20 For so it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods, And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made. And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the LORD their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city. And they set them up images and groves in every high hill, and under every green tree: And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the LORD carried away before them; and wrought wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger: For they served idols, whereof the LORD had said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing. Yet the LORD testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets. Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their God. And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them. And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal. And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only. Judah kept not the commandments of the LORD their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made. And the LORD rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight.
From these verses let us see what can keep us from hearing the Word of God
- They were fearful.
"They feared other gods in the sense or reverencing them" They became idol worshippers
- They walked in the statutes of the heathen.
They were friends with the world and had the same values" Friendship with the world is an enemy of God"
- They sinned secretly.
Did secretly those things which were not right in God's eyes.
Ezekiel 8:12 Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery (mind, thoughts)? for they say, The LORD seeth us not; the LORD hath forsaken the earth.
- They built high places in the city
Traditions, rituals, preconceived ideas, habits and addictions can become high places in our lives. The god they served was the god of their imagination not the God of the Bible.
- They set up images and groves in every high place and under every green tree and did wicked things.
They practiced sexual sin, pornography, prostitution, homosexuality, beastiality. Their whole lives began to center around their lust
- They burned incense to other gods.
They praised and lifted up and exalted up other things besides God.
- They served idols
They became idolaters loving other things more than God. They loved and served the works of their own hands, materialism. Misplaced affections and priorities. God moved from first place in their lives to second, third, fourth, etc., etc.
- They hardened their necks.
They became stubborn and rebellious and would not listen or submit to correction
- They did not believe in the Lord their God
Doubt and unbelief took over their lives
- They rejected his statutes and his covenant
They became covenant breakers, they never kept their word or honoured their promises
- They rejected his testimony against them
They refused to accept God's evaluation of their spiritual condition, therefore refused correction. They would not hear that what they were doing was wrong
- They followed vanity and became vain
- They were full of pride, unteachable, full of self, social climbers
- They left all of the commandments of the Lord
They refused to live by God's law
14. They worshipped the host of heaven
Astrology, zodiac, sooth sayers,
15. They caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire
They used their children to satisfy their own lusts. Sexual, physical and emotional abuse, abortion, no value for children, neglect
16. They used divination and enchantments
The occult, fortune tellers, crystal ball and card readers, new age, chanting, mantras, spells, potions, magic, witchcraft
17. They sold themselves to the devil in the sight of God.
They compromised the truth for personal gain, money, popularity and personal advancement, prostitution of their values for personal gain
Jesus accused the religious people of his day of not being able to hear him.
John 8:42-47 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
If we are to hear the Word of the Lord for ourselves we need to get away from everything and everyone else and spend time in prayer with him. Don't talk, listen, journal
1 kings 19:9-13 And Elijah came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?
(7) True disciples have a seeing eye
Matthew 16:13-17 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
Peter looking, through the eye of the Spirit or the eye of faith, was able to see something about Christ, no one else could see. Some saw him as a reincarnation of John the Baptist or as one of the prophets. Some saw him as a teacher, others as the son of Mary and Joseph but only Peter was able to see him as the Christ, because God had opened his eyes to the reality of Christ's true identity. Peter was able to look beyond the natural realm and see the invisible realm. Man looks at the outward appearance but a disciple sees what is in the heart. A disciple sees what a man can become in Christ, not what he is or has been in the past. Things are not always as they appear and a disciple of Christ is able to look into or discern people's motives.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Listen to the words of Jesus in
Luke 10:21 21-24 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him. And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see: For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
And the words of the apostle Paul in
1 Cor 2: 9-15 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
(8) True disciples manifest the fruit of the Spirit in their lives.
Galatians 5:14-26 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
E. W. Kenyon said, "The fruit of the Spirit is the evidence of divinity within"
We live in a day when many people profess to be Christians but manifest very little of the fruit of the Spirit. Listen to the words of James in
James 3: 8-18 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
Instead of being gentle, humble and easy to get along with they are critical, judgemental and difficult to get along with. Bitter water and sweet water cannot come out of the same fountain. Whatever is in the heart will eventually come out of the mouth
The Bible often uses the word "fruit" to describe the end of a process
Mark 4: 26-29 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how. For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come.
The fruit of the Spirit is manifest through a growing process. It is the expression of the nature of God Himself in us. Everything God does is a result of the outflow of His character. He created the world because He is creative. He heals because He is health or wholeness. The same must be true of us. What we are doing must be a result of who we are on the inside. We are known, by the fruit we produce. You cannot continually produce something you are not. Eventually, who you really are, will come shinning through, either for good or for evil
Jesus said in
John 13: 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
And in Matthew 7:15-23 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Love is the fruit of the Spirit we are looking for in disciples because God in essence is love. If we are growing in God we must be growing in love because God is love.
Gal 5: 22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
The fruit of the Spirit is not a code of behaviour we adhere to or a fleshly discipline to which we subject ourselves. It is an outflowing or outgrowing of the nature of God in His disciples. It empowers us to respond to situations and people in a way that no amount of discipline ever could. Do good to those who harm you and pray for those who despitefully use you are not possible in human strength. It must be a divine empowerment.
We must understand that the production of the Fruit of the Spirit involves a divine partnership between God and us. There are things He must do and we must do. If a farmer wants a harvest, he must prepare the soil, plant the seed and nurture the crop. God gives the increase. Fruit will not be produced without the contribution of both parties. Such is the truth in the production of the Fruit of the Spirit. Jesus was aware of this principle. He said,"Of mine ownself I can do nothing"
1 Corinthians 3:6-9 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.
We must grow out of the mentality that Christianity is just a set of standards, laws, rules and regulations for living. Christianity is really the out living of God within us. It is Christ in us that is our hope of glory. No amount of "will power" will enable you to live a life pleasing to God. He is either in you to live it or it's not going to be done.
We need to understand the fruit of the Spirit is love. E.W. Kenyon said "Love is God invading the human realm". God's love "Agape love" is totally selfless in its nature and interested in the well being of others over self. It compels us to acts of love. The apostle Paul said in
2 Cor 5:14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:
The Greek word translated "Constraineth" is "Sunecho" meaning "to hold together, compress, arrest, hold prisoner, limit choices, compel"
It is the same word used to describe someone in chains, whose ears are plugged, eyes are blindfolded and whose mouth is gagged, bring unable to speak. We are taken prisoner by the love of Christ and we have no choice but to act like Christ in every situation. We must grow into this condition of heart. It speaks of maturity and that's what discipleship is all about. As mature Christians when we see someone hurting we cannot take the ayttide thatw e are not going to get involved. We are compelled to act because of the love of God working in our hearts. The very nature of Christ is revealed through the Fruit of the Spirit
In Gal 5:22 the Greek word "fruit" is not plural it is singular. It is not fruits of the Spirit. The rest of the items following love are the qualities of love.
- Joy is love's strength
- Peace is love's security
- Long suffering or patience is love's stability or love's willingness
- Gentleness is the action of love
- Goodness is the character and the quality of love
- Faith is the expectancy and the trust of love
- Meekness is the submission of love
- Temperance is the discipline or self-control of love
9. True disciples are worshippers of God
Matthew 28:16-20 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
The English word "Worship" means "worth-ship". It is concerned with the worthiness, dignity or value of a person. It means paying homage or respect to someone and in the religious world is used for reverent devotion.
Webster's dictionary defines "worship" as "adore, admire, dote, esteem, exalt, love, revere, reverence and magnify". Quite obviously worship is totally concerned with the worthiness of God not the worthiness of the worshipper. In contrast to that mentality we encounter the mentality of the Pharisee who when he saw the prostitute worshipping Jesus by an extravagant display of love, said in
Luke 7:39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.
In the Old Testament the Hebrew word for "worship" is "Shachah" meaning "to bow, do reverence, fall down, stoop, crouch, prostrate and beseech humbly". It is used 172 in the Old Testament. It is more than an attitude. It is an attitude expressed by action; the greater the reverence, the greater the expression of action. A lukewarm heart will produce lukewarm action. A zealous heart will produce demonstative acts of worship. When people in the Bible worshipped God it was evident to all around them that they were doing so.
In the New Testament there are three words for Worship
- Latreuo-To worship publically
- Sebomai-To fear or hold in awe
- Proskuneo-To kiss towards, to kiss the hands or feet
The New Testament words are far more intimate. We can bow at a distance but kissing requires close contact
Ephesisns 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
We are beckoned to get close to God, to embrace Him, kiss and love Him, pour our hearts out to Him and touch Him with our feelings. When the prostitute poured the ointment on Jesus head as an expression of her worship she had to get close to him. She washed his feet with the tears from her eyes and dried his feet with her hair.
One of the greatest stories in the Bible concerning worship is found in the Samaritan woman's encounter with Jesus in John 4:5-30. Let's see what we can learn about worship from this encounter
- Worship begins with an attitude of giving. Jesus asks her for a drink of water and He offers her a drink of everlasting water
- Worship and love are synomous. This woman was looking for love in all the wrong places.
- Worship must be done as a result of revelation.
- Worship must be personal and full of feeling
- Worship comes out of a "now" encounter with Christ.
- Our relationships with one another will effect our worship of God. She was a Samaritan and He was a Jew
- Worship produces service
- The physical place of worship is secondary to the attitude of the heart
- Worship is something we must grow in.
(10) True disciples are empowered by the Holy Spirit
Acts 1:4-8 And Jesus being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
If we are going to be disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ we need to be empowered by the Holy Spirit. God's intention for our lives is not simply to be moral or good people. It is not to do the best you can. God's purpose for us is to live supernatural lives. It is to live lives that are patterned after the life of Jesus Christ and we can't do that in our own strength. No matter how great our desire is, to please God and to do the right thing, we cannot do it on our own. The pull of the spirit of the world is simply too strong. Our flesh is simply too weak. The apostle Peter had all the good intentions in the world. He walked with Jesus Christ for tree three and one-half years. He sat under Christ's teaching and witnessed the miracles that the Lord performed but when the test came he failed it miserably. He cursed and swore and denied the Lord three times and ran and hid himself when they accused him of being a follower of Jesus Christ. But on the day of Pentecost, after he was baptized in the Holy Spirit, he bolding declared Jesus to be the Saviour of the world and preached a sermon that brought 300 souls into the kingdom of heaven..
The disciples of the Book of Acts church were empowered by the Holy Ghost.
Acts 2:1-21 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
The apostle Peter said it was the fulfillment of Joel's prophecy of
Joel 2:28-29 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
Acts 2:38-39 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
Peter said the Holy Ghost was God's promise to future generations. We can see the work of the church in the Book of Acts was two fold; get people saved and baptized in the Holy Ghost. The importance of the Holy Ghost to the essential functioning of the Church of Jesus Christ cannot be over emphasized. Jesus in Luke 4:18-19 stated that the Spirit of the Lord was upon Him to equip Him for ministry and in John 4:19 that He could do nothing of Himself. It is the Spirit that quickeneth, that giveth life. Without the Holy Spirit and the accompanying gifts of the Spirit, the Church lacks the spiritual equipment outlined in 1 Cor.12, which is so necessary for an aggressive and successful attack on the powers of darkness. She is also deprived of that edifying enrichment derived from the manifestation of the Holy Spirit's presence and power in her midst.
The Bible is full of God's supernatural dealings with His people. The experience of regeneration, whereby we become born again, new creatures in Christ is supernatural. Christians readily admit that the devil is supernatural in his person, power and activities. Yet some Christians are inclined to shrink from the thought of a supernatural Baptism in the Holy Ghost with the supernatural gift of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance. If a person is "called" to be a son of God through faith in Jesus Christ, that person is also in consequence a prospective recipient of the baptism in the Holy Ghost.
Matt 3:11-17 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
John the Baptist speaks of the necessity of it in his life. He says to Christ," I have need to be baptized with the baptism you baptize with."
Jesus in His ministry promises the Holy Ghost
Luke 11:9-13 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
John 20: 21-23 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.
John 7:37-39 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
John 14:12-27 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
We need to understand that Jesus Christ is God's gift to the world
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
and the Holy Ghost is God's gift to the church.
John 14: 15-17 If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Let's look at ten reasons why we should be baptized in the Holy Ghost?
- Jesus commanded His disciples to receive the Holy Ghost.
He said the Holy Ghost would give them power to be His witnesses and we certainly need that today.
Acts 2:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
- The Holy Ghost is God's gift to us to assure us that He will be with us forever
Knowing that God is with you in every situation will make you prosperous and an over comer. God was with Joseph and God prospered him. God was with Joshua and God gave him the victory over all his enemies.
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
- The Holy Ghost is called the Spirit of Truth or the Spirit of Reality and it is the Holy Ghost that makes God and the things of the kingdom of God real in our lives.
John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
- The Holy Ghost will teach us all things. He will bring us spiritual understanding and bring all things to our remembrance
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
5. The Holy Ghost comes to convict us and reveal sin in our lives.
John 16: 7-11 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
6. The Holy Ghost will guide us into all truth and reveal to us greater things about Jesus and the Kingdom of God
John 16:13-16 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall show it unto you. A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
7. The Holy Ghost will enable us to pray in the spirit according to the will of God. When we don't now how to pray in our understanding, we need to pray in tongues
1 Cor 14:14-15 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
Romans 8: 26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
8. The Holy Ghost can help us build up our faith
Jude 1: 17-20 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,
9. The Holy Spirit is our helper
John 14:16-18 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. The Amplified New Testament reads."I will ask the Father and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener and Standby) that He may remain with you forever. The Spirit of Truth whom the world cannot receive because it does not see Him, nor know and recognize Him. But you know and recognize Him for He lives with you constantly and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans-comfortless, desolate, bereaved, forlorn, helpless-I will come (back) to you."
Too often when we need help we run here and there trying to find someone to help us when we have a Helper on the inside. Isn't it time we began relying on His help?
10. The Holy Spirit is our entrance into the gifts of the Holy Spirit
1 Cor 12:1-11 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
How to Receive the Infilling of the Holy Ghost
1. Line up your mind with the Word of God.
Many Christians are kept from this experience by thinking they are not good enough or that they must reach some spiritual plateau before God will bless them with the gift of the Spirit. We must understand that anyone who is saved is ready to receive the Holy Ghost. It is God's gift to His children. Some Christians think they must do something to qualify, that somehow they must gain God's favour or that they must be perfect to be baptized in the Holy Ghost. If Jesus has washed you in His blood, you are ready. I am not trying to endorse carnality but the Bible tells us carnal Christians can be filled with the Holy Ghost. The apostle Paul called the Corinthian Christians carnal but in 1 Cor 1:7 he said "Ye come behind in no gift". We also know that baby Christians can receive the Holy Ghost because Phillips converts in Samaria received. Who needs power more to live lives pleasing to God than carnal or baby Christians?
2. Believe that the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues is for you today, this minute, right now.
The Holy Ghost is received by faith and God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him in faith
3. Expect to speak in other tongues as the Spirit of God gives the utterance.
Open your mouth, fill you lungs with air and lift you voice up to God and begin to speak out whatever sounds seem easy for you to make, regardless of how foreign they may sound to your ears. Yield your vocal cords and tongue to God and begin to praise Him in whatever language He gives you to praise Him until a clear free language comes.
4. Begin speaking.
It is of the utmost importance to understand that God is not going to make you speak in other tongues. He is not going to overpower you or take control of your life. How many times have I seen people come to receive the Baptism of the Holy Ghost and speak in other tongues with their mouth shut and their teeth clenched. Expect the Holy Spirit to move upon your vocal cords and to put supernatural words on your tongue and lips. Open your mouth and speak out in faith co-operating with the Holy Ghost.
5. Don't let fear or pride rob you of God's gift.
Luke 11:9-13 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. And of which of you that is a father shall his son ask a loaf, and he give him a stone? or a fish, and he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he give him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
6. Get around Christians that have already received the Holy Ghost and have them lay hands on you and pray for you to receive.
Acts 8:14-17 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
As God begins to open your heart and shed light on His gift of the Holy Ghost, it is important to spend time with other Christians who have "like precious faith".
As we complete this teaching on Discipleship let us pray to become more like Jesus Christ in every area of our lives. Heaven Father mold us and shape us into Your image and likeness. Empower us to be Your disciples, In Jesus name, Amen
